Hello, Somewhat suddenly, printing PDFs from Adobe Reader has become very slow. A single sub-1MB B&W page can take 10 minutes. This is happening across all servers and printers. Server 1: Windows 2003 Standard with Adobe Reader 9.5.0 Server 2: Windows 2008 Standard SP2 with Reader 11.0.10 Server 3: Windows 2008 Standard SP2 with Reader 9.0.0 All servers are functioning as terminal servers with users connecting from thin clients via RDP. When a user tries to print a PDF they are presented with a progress window telling them it is preparing the document for printing. This process can take a minute to more than 10 minutes.
When the progress window closes, it can take several minutes for the print job to appear in the print queue. Once in the print queue it prints fine. This leads me to believe the printers aren't the issue, but I still tried suggested troubleshooting steps on them too. I've printed direct from the printer and that works fine. I had brief success after restarting the server. PDF print jobs went well for a very short while. Within an hour or so, PDF printing went dead slow again.

The printer I'm focusing on is an HP MFP630 on Server 3. Server 3 did have Reader 11.0.10 on it before I started. I rolled it back to Reader 9 on the advice of a page somewhere on the Web. Server 3 has 8GB RAM which I thought might cause a problem, but with even just one person logged on to it, the problem persists. Here are the steps I've taken, in no particular order. With Adobe Reader: • Enabled Print as Image • Rolled back from Reader XI to Reader 9 • Turned off Enhanced Security settings • Checked 'let printer determine colors' • Rolled back reader from XI to 9 With Server 3: • Disabled TCP Chimney Offload • Searched web for reports of a Windows update that could cause this • Checked security suite to see if it was interfering. Nothing obvious.
No signs of an infection either. • Applied a suggested registry fix to ensure Reader Enhanced Security was off for all users and restarted the server. This is the only point at which printing got better, for a short time. With HP MFP630 printer on Server 3: • Rolled back HP Universal PCL 6 to HP Universal PCL 5 • Removed PCL driver and installed PS driver. Didn't work so went back to PCL 5 driver.
• Uninstalled and reinstalled printer. • Decreased DPI to 300 fro 600 • Disabled advanced printing features • Switched from Spool print documents. To Print directly to printer I'm sure there's a few other things I tried, but that's the bulk of them. Since restarting the server worked once, although for a short time, I thought I'd give that a go and monitor the processes to see if anything changed.
This server is a guest on a VMWare hypervisor, so while it was off, I thought, let's allocate 4 more GB of RAM. Then I restarted the server. Monitoring the processes hasn't shown anything different as to what's running and how much of the resources they're consuming. Although overall memory usage has dropped to around the 60% mark and PDF printing is better.
