Make a new directory, say, 'scanmaker' (without the quotes). Three directories (disk1, disk2, disk3) should appear in the scanmaker directory you created. Delete the drv_swdi_v3_03_ad.exe file. Plug the scanner into a USB port on the computer and power up the scanner. Windows will not be able to find a driver for the scanner. Access the Windows Device Manager (click on the start icon, type 'device manager' (no quotes) into the 'search programs and files' slot, and click on the 'device manager' box that should appear). 1) Although I could get my Microtek 5900 to work with IrfanView, it would not work with Corel Photopaint X5. 2) Compared to the ScanWizard 5 drivers (advanced mode) this driver proved to be bare-bones, at best. It ran the scanner -- that was about it; no prescan adjustments were posssible. Consequently, I bit the bullet and tried to install one of the 32-bit ScanWizard driver packages to see if that would work. I downloaded the sw5_6650_eu.exe package. Double-clicked on it and it self-extracted to a new directory of its own.
I entered that directory and double-clicked on the setup.exe file and the software installed itself in a folder in the Program Files (x86) directory. This driver works in IrfanView and in Corel Photopaint X5, and it is the standard ScanWizard software, allowing various parameters to be set for a scan.
